Standardizing Icon Dimensions for iOS and Android

Designing for mobile requires strict adherence to platform guidelines. Ensuring your icons are the correct size and have adequate touch targets is crucial for a good user experience.

iOS Icon Guidelines

Apple recommends designing navigation bar and toolbar icons on a 24x24 pt grid, or 28x28 pt for slightly larger elements. App store icons require a massive 1024x1024 px master file.

Android Material Design

Google's Material Design system standardizes system icons at 24x24 dp. It is important to leave a 2dp padding boundary around the icon, resulting in a 20x20 dp active area.

Touch Targets

Regardless of the visual size of the icon, the actual interactive touch area should be at least 44x44 pt on iOS and 48x48 dp on Android to prevent frustrating mis-taps.
